NYC Staycation | Instagram Weekend

Sorry to be absent lately mes cheris, but it was necessary to put myself on a little NYC Staycation. With all the running around I have done in the last couple months, I finally had the opportunity to rest…and so I Carpe Diem-ed the weekend away. Walks in Central Park, Ferry ride to Ikea, and lots of drinks with friends, it was a fantastic long Instagram weekend to rest, enjoy life, and gear up for the next chapter in my life.

It has been cold here in NYC lately, and since I’m stubborn and determined to wear my closet full of cute Spring stuff, I have had to add tights to all my Spring outfits to do so. Bummer.

Went shopping in SoHo. I love passing all the creative storefronts around that nabe. They are the greatest. I especially love the C Wonder storefront. How fun and regal are these doors?
You know it’s going to be a good day when you start off your morning with Magnolia Bakery breakfast. Raspberry crumb muffin, coffee, infinity scarf, and Gaga glasses. Done and done.

I watched the Enterprise space shuttle fly over Manhattan as it made its voyage to its new NYC home at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. Bonus points for living on the Hudson River? You get to walk 500 feet to go see a space shuttle fly by your house. Um. Awesome. Not bad for an NYC Staycation huh?

Had an all day long adventure to Ikea on Saturday which of course consisted of taking the NYC Water Taxi out to Brooklyn’s Ikea. The Southstreet Seaport is always a great photo opp place for an Instagram weekend, and I haven’t been out past the Statue of Liberty in over a year, so that was a fun ride.
Ended the weekend celebrating a dear friends golden birthday out in SoHo at The Anchor bar. The DJ was amazing, and every single song had me screaming with excitement. Therefore it was a great dancing night to celebrate life with my really good friends.
So how do you Staycation mes cheris?

The Beauty of Harlem

My errands have brought me up to Harlem a couple of times in the past week and I must say I noticed something today… there is a beauty of Harlem. I always had sentimental nostalgia for America’s birthplace of Jazz but when you exit the train at 125th Street and all you see are cheap wig stores and cell phone accessory vendors on the sidewalk sreaming at you…I tend to think NO WAY! But upon further exploration you unfold a beauty to this very very uptown hideaway.

If you have noticed via the Twittersphere I officially joined Instagram over the Easter Weekend and I posted a photo of the ever iconic Apollo Theatre.
If you are on Instagram please follow me @EmbellishedBlog!

{merci RobertaOnTheArts.com}
I have decided I want to find a day to go on a Harlem Adventure. I am going to come armed with my DSLR Camera…which I sadly don’t do that often anymore. And I will report back with my findings on the beauty of Harlem. And maybe find some cheap shopping.

Have you explored the beauty of Harlem?

Instagram Palm Sunday Weekend

It was quite an eventful Palm Sunday weekend, productive and fun, my favorite kind. Work was complete, taxes were filed, dancing was done, and FroYo was had to fight the rain. Have you filed your taxes yet? I hiked out to Brooklyn to wrap up mine…so naturally Hell froze over. It is actually is crazy how much I packed into this weekend, but it was such a refreshing weekend. #MuchNeeded.
Kicking off the Palm Sunday weekend with a great Friday, my last day helping out at Glamour Magazine was bittersweet. I love the team their and was sad to say goodbye, but on to my next adventures. God brings along the greatest experiences if you let him.

Clean Plate Club member from a wonderful Lava Cake dessert at Red at the SouthStreet Seaport!

I went to Brooklyn {Eeeek!} and filed my taxes. Felt great to check that off my To Do List.
Hung out a ton with the Bestie in the Financial District, her nabe. It feels so New York down there, tall, tall buildings that feel epic. This one frames the street straight to Ground Zero and the new Freedom Tower being constructed.

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Palm Sunday demanded my Burberry rainboots and houndstooth umbrella come out of hiding. Patterns was the trend of the day.

To make the rainy day a little better, I grabbed FroYo with friends. Since I finally saw The Hunger Games, I had to pay tribute to my favorite tribute Katniss Everdeen by rocking her signature braid for the day. The Hunger Games books are thrilling and you need to read them pronto!
Did you Instagram this Palm Sunday Weekend? Do share!

What I Did This Weekend: Snow in NYC!

It finally snowed in New York this weekend and what a beautiful snow it was. Light, short, and melting by the next day. Perfect. I was so scarred by the last NYC Winter that I was very wary leading into November, espesh after October’s freak snowstorm. Alas, here it is January and we got our first (and little baby) snow in NYC! Therefore what I did this weekend was walk through Riverside Park my favorite NYC locals park and book a lot of veg out movie seshes with the roommie!

Riverside Park is on the Hudson River along the Upper West Side. It is by far the most quaint and remote park in the city, with I would guess 98% locals. This is where I go running…although what I did this weekend was merely spectate the snow in NYC….not run on it.

Fun Fact: Riverside Park is where You’ve Got Mail was filmed. The whole movie was actually set in my neighborhood on the Upper West Side. As is, Will & Grace and How I Met Your Mother!

I love watching old favorite NYC movies and discovering they are right around the corner from my apartment! That actually happened this weekend when my roomie and I watched Uptown Girls!

I had quite a productive weekend. I ironed all of my clothing alterations. My fashion friend and I have regular sewing nights which we grabbed one on Martin Luther King Day when we were both off of work. I then cleaned my room putting away my better fitting clothes and  I prepared my taxes for Tax Season 2012. To end the perfect weekend, I watched the NY Giants field goal kick their way into the Super Bowl! Since my dear Carolina Panthers are officially out, bless their hearts, I begin rooting for my NY teams. It’s hard having a divided heart…

Congratulations New York Giants!

Fashionspiration: Fashion Archive

I thought I’d pull out an oldy but goody from the fashion archive of The Embellished Life vault! The sad thing about blogs is you put up so much information from the beginning, but it takes time to build readers so your early, inspired pieces get seen by very few people!

This dip into the fashion archive is for some visual inspiration from the fashion photography world. Please gain inspiration today from the works of Richard Avedon, Annie Leibowitz, and Thomas Legrange (as pictured above) among other greats.

Fashion 101: Yves Saint Laurent

It has been a while since my blog has mentioned anything about France now that I live in New York City. So for this lesson of Fashion 101 I wanted to feature a true legend to the fashion world, and France’s own, Yves Saint Laurent.

As I just visited the Alexander McQueen Exhibition: Savage Beauty at The Met (don’t worry that post is coming…and YES it was amazing), I was reminded of an equally great exhibit I had the honor of visiting last summer in Paris. That’s right, I had so many posts and photos going up in the summer of 2010 that somewhere amongst the chaos of my cross-Atlantic move, I had a tiny little gold mine of snapshots that got lost in the recesses of my external drive! So here’s to another great Fashion 101!

Yves Saint Laurent at the Petit Palais
along the Seine River…my heart just melts as I think of it.
**Please note: not all of these photos are the best, I was shooting from the hip…literally… as I was trying to discreetly capture the ambience of the exhibition for you guys without getting caught.**
At 17, Yves Saint Laurent started his career as an assistant to Christian Dior in 1953. Dior gradually accepted more and more of his sketch submissions and named him his successor to the House of Dior. In the Fall of 1957 Dior died unexpectedly of a heart attack and suddenly at 21 Yves Saint Laurent was to direct his first runway line.
Here are the stats that any true fashionista should know about YSL:
1. Fused Art and Culture with Fashion
In his premier line for the Christian Dior label, he set the world on fire by creating Dior’s signature “New Look” with trapeze dresses.
 {merci Girl’s Guide to Paris}

His life was all about art and culture and it was constantly cognisant in his collections. Including his famous YSL color block dress inspired by the well known Mondrian painting, and was just one of many art reinterpretations over the course of his fashion career. His influence was often found outside of Europe as well, and he is credited as the first designer to send ethnic models down his runway, including longtime muse, supermodel Iman.

2. Founded Ready to Wear
As many designers in the mid sixties meddled with a few pret-a-porter pieces, Yves Saint Laurent was the first to launch a full ready to wear collection in the Fall of 1966. In addition that Fall, he opened the first of his ready to wear stores which he called his Rive Gauche stores, in Paris. Catherine Deneuve was his first customer.

Fashion fades, style is eternal ~Yves Saint Laurent

3. Uncovered the lost art of Couture
The sixties and seventies were a time where the golden age of decadent couture had long been forgotten, ahem… polyester suits. But as a couturier himself, Yves Saint Laurent’s creations brought back haute couture into the spotlight it deserved.

Haute couture consists of secrets whispered from generation to generation…If in ready to wear, a garment is manufactured according to standard sizes, the haute couture garmet adapts to any imperfection in order to eliminate it. ~Yves Saint Laurent

4. The women’s tuxedo suit

YSL’s partner and longtime companion Pierre Berge once said, “We often say Chanel has liberated the woman, which is true, but we can also say that YSL gave them the power.” No truer words could be spoken. Yves Saint Laurent’s designs were specific to empower the woman and pull out her beauty at the same time. In his Fall 1965 collection, YSL introduced Le Smoking, his women’s tuxedo pantsuit that changed to female corporate look forever. YSL is also credited with other trends such as safari jackets, thigh high boots, and his coined beatnik look.

{merci wikipedia}

Yves Saint Laurent was a vital piece of the ever evolving landscape of fashion, and experiencing this exhibit was truly breath taking. In the Centre Pompidou on January 22, 2002 YSL showed his last collection before retiring, showcasing 30 new looks and a collection of 300 models emphasizing the highlights over his career. He died of brain cancer on June 1, 2008 in his Paris residence.

I want to thank all the women who have worn my clothes, the famous and the unknown, who have been so faithful to me and given me so much joy. ~Yves Saint Laurent

Traveling Diva: Savannah, Georgia

My darlings, I had an absolutely wonderful trip to Savannah, Georgia for Memorial Day Weekend. Hot, sunny, and full of sweet tea, it was just what I needed for a good southern fix! Plus, it was so wonderful to get a nice break from the city rush and spend some quality time with the fam.

Our view from the hotel, overlooking Savannah’s Historic District
(complete with a ferry boat to shuttle you back and forth)!

Savannah is like a canvas of inspiration, between the cobblestone streets and the
swirly wrought iron work, every turn brings a new wave of artistry.

I just love how all the streets in the south are framed by massive sweeping oaks that hang Spanish Moss.
It feels like you are walking through a movie set.

So tell me mes cheris, are you jonesin’ for a trip down to Savannah, Georgia now?
I must say, I loved eating all my comfort foods I can’t quite get in NYC, but man if I didn’t have to eat salad the entire next week to feel like I wouldn’t gain 10 pounds from visiting Dixie country!
Y’all come back now ya hear?

Toni Francesc: Fashion Show and After Party

As I have escaped my Fashion Show daze and am doing my best to space out the shows for you, I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed with the amazingness that was NYFW! After attending the Lincoln Center fashion show of Toni Francesc and then the fabulous After Party, I must say I had a ball!

Beautifully made clothing draped the runway for the fashion show,
and then a lack there of…graced the after party!
This model’s hair is breathtaking, she reminds me of a siren.
There were lots of beautiful Garnet silks used in Toni’s line.
This was my favorite jacket in the collection!
I love pumpkin in Fall…wearing it, eating it, decorting it…doesn’t matter. And this backless shirt/pants combo was to die for. Backless is my favorite surprise to pull…i.e. I need a shirt like this!
After a wonderful bow by the designer, Mr. Toni Francesc, my friend and I returned home to change for the after party downtown.
Sometimes, you just know you’re in New York City…but hey at least its a live saxophone!
I was sure to say hello Toni Francesc at the after party! I paid respects to his beautiful line, and told him I very much enjoyed it. Overall pretty epic night on the road to my fashion dream!

Fashion Week Review: Vivienne Tam & Starbucks Video Feature!

The buzzing excitement in the crisp white tents of Fashion Week does not leave much of time to come down from your fashion high after each show. I hopped into the Vivienne Tam tent shortly after my very first runway show with ADAM. Still hazy with sheer bliss, I sat and prepared myself to review my next show. I also just learned that I make a cameo in the Starbucks Video Feature from my interview during fashion week!!  It was just posted and I couldn’t wait to show you all!

The small bad news I have is since the show was so dark, it was very hard for me to shoot without a tripod for my camera. So the few side shots are from my seat and the rest are from my saving grace Women’s Wear Daily!

 A note from Vivienne Tam:

My starting point is the elaborate costumes of the Kun Opera. I turn this fantasy into everyday wear. The sculptural shapes of the opera are translated, turned into everyday wear in tweed, wool, for both day or night. Fabrics include tweed, wool, silks, and lace in a mix of weights. Silhouettes include the graceful water sleeve, an opera-cape shoulder, reminiscent of a pagoda. Motifs include the dragon, stylized wind, fire and clouds. Traditional patterns are printed in trope l’oeil; appliques, lace embroideries and crochet echo ancient handicraft, but are produced with modern materials and methods. Tassels, fringe, Mongolian lamb, and crystal embellish and highlight, adding texture. The bright colors of the opera costumes are adapted to the sophisticated palette of today’s urban woman, with subtle opulence.

Beautifully detailed clothing in the dreamiest motifs and mixes of textures Vivienne Tam did a superb job blending the Modern Woman with the grace of the Ancient Orient! You all know how much I can’t resist being inspired by travel…since it’s basically how I live my life!

And speaking of textures… I was asked to talk about my favorite Fall texture by E! Network’s Amanda Garrigus for the Starbucks Frappuccio Question of the Day!

So what is your favorite Fall texture my dears?
