The Beauty of Harlem

My errands have brought me up to Harlem a couple of times in the past week and I must say I noticed something today… there is a beauty of Harlem. I always had sentimental nostalgia for America’s birthplace of Jazz but when you exit the train at 125th Street and all you see are cheap wig stores and cell phone accessory vendors on the sidewalk sreaming at you…I tend to think NO WAY! But upon further exploration you unfold a beauty to this very very uptown hideaway.

If you have noticed via the Twittersphere I officially joined Instagram over the Easter Weekend and I posted a photo of the ever iconic Apollo Theatre.
If you are on Instagram please follow me @EmbellishedBlog!

I have decided I want to find a day to go on a Harlem Adventure. I am going to come armed with my DSLR Camera…which I sadly don’t do that often anymore. And I will report back with my findings on the beauty of Harlem. And maybe find some cheap shopping.

Have you explored the beauty of Harlem?

What I Wore | St. Patrick’s Day Weekend

It was a beautiful St. Patrick’s Day weekend and I hope you celebrated properly. NYC was built by the Irish and since I am Irish it’s even more fitting to really get in to the celtic mood! I took a weekend break and headed out to Connecticut with a bestie for some needed R+R. What I wore was demanding the Spring weather stick around for a long time.

I rocked fun color with my floral print crop top sweater, thanks Beacon’s Closet, Brooklyn. Perfect for a subtle touch of St. Patrick’s Day green. This cobalt blue accordion pleat skirt from Banana Republic is the latest fav of my wardrobe and is perfection with the top. This weekend I switched out my Winter wardrobe for my Spring wardrobe…one of my favorite things to do! I love finding my favorite clothes that I forgot about since August. And I LOVE pairing my old favorites with my new favorites, as in this case!

Then armed with lots of bangles, skinny watches, and a cobalt beaded necklace,
I was ready for a Guinness!
My bestie represented her Irish roots very well with a deep emerald green. You cannot go wrong with a high to low dress especially when it has that gorgeous cutout trim!

I spy with my Old Hollywood obsessed eye an iconic Upper East Side apartment….can you guess who lived here? This is the apartment of Audrey Hepburn as Holly GoLightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s! This is one of my all time favorite movies and walking down this block feels like they are about to yell action and I will Audrey Hepburn herself stroll down the stairs in her Little Black Dress, hat, and diamonds. It gives me chills to live in a city that is so iconic and special. I just love NYC.

What did you wear this
St. Patrick’s Day weekend?

Golden Globes 2012: Best and Worst Dressed

Well the awards season is officially in full swing and that means lots of great red carpet moments we are all on the edge of our seats to see. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed by the Golden Globes 2012 last night. Of course there were pretty gowns by a few, but as a whole I was unimpressed by the red carpet fashion. The best and worst dressed run down goes as follows…

Best Dressed Runners Up

Claire Danes worked the simple in the front, statement in the back look with this bedazzled J.Mendel gown. I actually really liked the dress but it didn’t Wow me enough to make the top.

*Thank you MovieFone for the instant photo access of everyone*

Katharine McPhee certainly has me excited for her new show “Smash”about making it on Broadway, secret dream career of mine, and I love her elegant nude ensemble a la Mrs. Donna Karen.

Reese Witherspoon took the red carpet by storm in this classic red Zac Posen show stopper. The sweetheart neckline and tailored detail fits America’s Sweetheart to a T.

Best Dressed

But out of all the worthy adversaries, I must give my Golden Globes 2012 Best Dressed Award to Sofia Vergara in her absolutely stunning Vera Wang gown. Navy blue has always been a favorite color choice of mine for evening gowns since it’s still a dark statement but not as often done, and add the crazy curves of Vergara and the feminine embellishment of Wang and you have a red carpet homerun!

Worst Dressed Runners Up

Ok, in their defense the clothing itself is not terrible, but could Brad and Angelina be any more unhappy? They look like two statues from Madame Toussaud’s made a jail break! The white in this Atelier Versace gown just clashes with Angelina’s skin making her look washed out, and with touches of that harsh fire engine red…not working for her. I’m sorry you get to sashay down the red carpet at the Golden Globes…at least look a little grateful.

I actually did some extra research for Julianna Margulies to find a flattering picture of her in this eggplant Naeem Khan gown. Naeem Khan is one of my favorite designers…but this gown makes Julianna actually look like an eggplant, she is one big column with no curve, no shape. There is a gorgeous deep V in the back which normally gets my vote every time. This Worst Dressed nom makes me sad.

Madonna almost had something lovely with the start of this Reem Acra gown, but what craft project went awry on bottom?

Stylist mishap for Lea Michele in this Marchesa gown. Let’s touch quickly on the fact that her hair and makeup styling makes her look like a man rather than the TV diva she is.  Moving on, Marchesa… again, one of my favorite designers… but didn’t we learn from Rose McGowan’s Dental Floss dress at the 1998 VMA’s that showing too much can be a bad idea? But true, that is extreme and sheer can be done correctly…even if that’s the argument…Halle Berry already wore a better version of this dress at the 2002 Oscar’s. Note: If it has been done, don’t try a repeat.

Worst Dressed

Although our Worst Dressed Runners Up so far are mainly for ill fitting or color qualms, Sarah Michelle Gellar in this tie dyed Monique Lhuillier gown has its own problems. A big dress with a big print, allows no room for anyone to win, so sadly that just leaves one very lonely Worst Dressed at the Golden Globes 2012. And that’s a shame because I love Buffy.

Did you enjoy the Golden Globes 2012? I personally had the channel surf between the awards show and the amazing Once Upon a Time, gotta hate it when shows double book. Overall, I thought the red carpet fashion last night fell a little flat, and have high hopes for the Oscar’s to redeem the awards season next Tuesday.

Shopping in Las Vegas: Hipster Emporium

While sitting down for a nice patio lunch in Las Vegas, I spotted this lovely little Las Vegas boutique across the way called R+D Hipster Emporium. The title alone intrigued me so as soon as I had finished my meal, off I went to do some shopping in Las Vegas.
My favorite storefront in Manhattan is the All Saints store for the same reason…rows and rows of vintage Singer sewing machines. It gets me in the door every time…with baited anticipation might I add.

Stocked with cute hipster merchandise in an array of Native American print smocks to high waisted retro denim and lots of choices for layering, the R+D Hipster Emporium did not fail to provide exactly what their name implies. This boutique makes shopping in Las Vegas an adventure, beyond the same old brand name hubs you expect. Refreshing.

I loved exploring this Las Vegas boutique for quirky vintage t-shirts and killer shoes. Not to mention their great selection of artful coffee table books that I wanted to add to my living room collection stat!

The R+D Hipster Emporium has a great selection and if you are shopping in the Las Vegas area, you should definitely stop in and check them out! Let them know that The Embellished Life sent you there!

Viva Las Vegas!

I hope you all enjoyed your wonderful holiday break and aren’t too heart broken to return to work today. I had a great time with my family out in Vegas, but I missed you all so much, so here I am reporting for duty on all the Vegas fun at Christmas time. Viva Las Vegas is most definitely right…

Whether it was the flight over Arizona, the Hoover Dam, or exploring Red Rock and Zion National Park, even the outskirts of Vegas are fun to explore! I went on a photo expedition, I just love the colors and grandeur of the West.

The Las Vegas Strip is an adventure in itself, full of decked out casino’s from every country, you can visit NY, Paris, Venice, and Cairo and only walk down one long block. People have been singing Viva Las Vegas for quite a while because it is a little burst of fun in the middle of the desert!

And I can’t properly document my trip without the Bellagio Fountains which I really did quite enjoy! So with some outdoor adventure and some indoor fun the sights of Vegas were well worth the trip. I am definitely returning with my girlfriends though to paint the town red!
How do you viva Las Vegas mes cheris?

Travel to Boston: Beantown Counter Culture

I spent the weekend gallivanting around Boston, Mass and had a wonderful time. The break from the city was perfect and the travel to Boston wasn’t too bad of a commute from NYC. After a short bus ride complete with WiFi and a working desk I was dropped off in the historic Beantown rightfully nicknamed for its obsession with coffee…as you can guess, we got along perfectly.

Here are some pictures from my travel to Boston along with a coffee shop definitely worth the drive by if you ever find yourself in town. I’m telling you the Beantown counter culture is the best.

This is a memorial garden for the lost soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It is lined with empty dog tags and very moving.

Pavement Coffeehouse is at the start of Newberry St (shopping central) and has a great vibe. This Beantown counter culture is local hang out which is always my hunt when I travel somewhere new. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a spinach bagel (YUM!) and an iced cold brew honey coffee. I’m pretty sure I finished it in one gulp, this stuff is seriously addicting. When you travel to Boston be sure to stop by. It’s phenom!

Travel to Boston

After Fashion Week I felt the need for a break, a city that has nothing to do with fashion and everything to do with a really good beer accompanied by a great time. So travel to Boston it is! And I must say…I am liking the 21st century’s approach to travel. I’m bussing it to travel to Boston and this bus has plugs to charge your phone, tables to work on and wait for it…WiFi! I’m literally blogging to you from the road right now which is insane.

My morning was a bit of a debacle though. My bus was booked for 9:10, I literally got there at 9:13 and it had already arrived, boarded, and left! What happened to board time and then leave? And isn’t travel always running at least 5 minutes late? Well I had to wait an HOUR for the next bus, and praise God it didn’t start raining until I got on the bus in the last Stand By Seat left! I was praying hard for that seat!

So I’ve only spent..mmm…9 hours in Boston prior to this trip, and I absolutely loved what I saw. So I’m excited to stay for a long weekend and get to see a much bigger picture of it! I will report back with pictures of my own of course but I’m not promising perfection with this gross rainy weekend we have ahead of us across the whole East Coast. For now, here are some pictures that have me excited.

Remembering 9/11 and Staying Strong

As I was still wrapping up emails last night (around 10pm) I heard a booming and turned around to see a fireworks show going on outside my office window! Hoboken, NJ put on a 9/11 memorial firework show remembering 9/11. It was nice to watch although I wasn’t sure I was on board with fireworks as fitting the occasion….but the Twin Tower Lights were on tonight and people could see them from all around.

Either way I am praying for my city, my country, and all those affected by 9/11 today as we remember the terrible day that changed all of our lives for ever 10 years ago. Living in NYC and hearing the real stories of people that worked downtown and knew many, many people who were in the Twin Towers. Some awe inspiring, many leave you speechless and choked up, but all remind you of something very important we learned that day. Mankind can pull together in the toughest conditions and come out strong on the other side. Tragedy is hard to go through, and leaning on your neighbor for support, and reciprocating in return, is a beautiful thing to watch. Remembering 9/11 should keep us all strong together.

The plans for the 9/11 Memorial and new World Trade Center plan are very nice. I absolutely love the water installation leaving a footprint of the Twin Towers. I plan to go spend some time there myself in maybe a month when hopefully not as many tourists are around. After 10 years we have finally cleaned up the rubble, began construction on World Trade Center 1 which I believe is 80 floors up now, and have a beautifully moving memorial in place. I remember seeing the rubble, the notes and flowers, and the steel cross at Ground Zero just a year after 9/11 happened. For the last several years it has just looked like a construction site. It will be nice to have a proper reflection space for remembering 9/11 once more.

Love to you all mes cheris,

God Bless.

Interior Inspiration: The Art of Gossip Girl

Lately I’ve indulged my baser instincts and pulled out the fundamental Gossip Girl seasons 1 & 2 from the DVD rack for some fashion inspiration and beautiful boys to stare at while eating dinner. I find the sets are such great interior inspiration that I must indulge in a bit of artist background. The powers that be in Gossip Girl land are always looking to bring in local factoids of New York City and especially to highlight hip NYC artists that are noteworthy for the Bass, Humphrey, Van der Woodsen clans.

Here are some of the sets where some interior inspiration may just jump directly on to the walls of my living room.

To begin there is debatably my favorite, the Richard Phillips “Spectrum” print that hangs over the staircase of the Van der Woodsen apartment. It is a statement piece that sets the mod chic elegance of the whole art-filled home.

My other favorite (they constantly tie for first) is the Richard Phillips “Scout” print hanging in Chuck Bass’s bedroom. I had no idea these two prints were the same artist so it is funny, although I suppose not surprising, that they are both equally my favorite.

The entryway also showcases some other great pieces that I love, but that don’t quite hypnotize me the same.

The Prada sign print by Elgmreen and Dragset may be the most prominent artwork among Lily’s collection as it is a bold piece directing any guests straight into the drama of their home.

{Thank you Sogni e Sorrisi for your  artists finds}

This Jessica Craig Martin print is actually quite good. I like the color choice, the appropriate modern feel of the fashion world as well as the interesting crop in the composition that has taken place. The dramatic crop makes you wonder about the lives of the portrait’s subjects…I like art that makes me wonder.

What art is your interior
inspiration of the moment?
